Mission Statement: Using the “C.A.R.E.S.” model, the mission of the Communication Sciences and Disorders program at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UH CSD) is to establish a center of excellence for:
- Clinical services for people challenged with speech-language, cognitive-communication, swallowing, hearing, and related disorders;
- Administrative infrastructure for internal and external collaboration and support;
- Research to support evidence-based practice;
- Education to prepare highly qualified professionals in speech-language pathology;
- Service to develop public awareness of communication sciences and disorders, and faculty participation and leadership at the university, state, national, and international levels.
Goals: The overarching goals of UH CSD fall into the domains of the C.A.R.E.S. model:
- Clinical Goal: Provide value-added patient care for the people in our community by expanding and optimizing our services in the University Health Partners of Hawai‘i Speech & Hearing Clinic;
- Administrative Goal: Develop and sustain a program of educational and clinical excellence in communication sciences and disorders by recruiting and retaining highly qualified faculty and clinical educators and providing them with resources and mentorship to successfully accomplish UH CSD’s mission and goals;
- Research Goal: Establish research partnerships that: 1) focus on community-identified needs; 2) consolidate skills, knowledge, expertise, and university and community resources; and 3) support transfer of research findings to inform community practice and policy;
- Educational Goal: Educate and prepare students to achieve academic and clinical competencies required to enter the profession of speech-language pathology and fulfill standards for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association;
- Service Goal: Build strong community partnerships and promote engagement of students in volunteer community service with faculty participation to increase sensitivity to challenges of individuals with disabilities and communication disorders.
CSD Vision: Our vision as a center of educational and clinical excellence is to establish and maintain dynamic, productive and cost effective programs in the field of communication sciences and disorders, to serve the people of Hawai‘i and beyond.
JABSOM MISSION: The John A.
