Pauline Mashima, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Pauline Mashima(Associate Professor & Graduate Program Chair) – Cognitive rehabilitation, voice disorders, fluency disorders

Dr. Mashima is Associate Professor and Graduate Chair in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Hawai`i, John A. Burns School of Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). She received her PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Cincinnati. She served as Chief of the Speech Pathology section at Tripler Army Medical Center from 1991 to 2015. During this time, she coordinated working groups to develop clinical guidance for cognitive rehabilitation for military service members and veterans with mild traumatic brain injury. Her service to ASHA includes the Joint Committee on Interprofessional Relations Between the American Psychological Association (APA) and ASHA, Continuing Education Board, Ad Hoc Committee on Telepractice in Speech-Language Pathology, Working Group on Telepractice, Multicultural Issues Board, and Coordinating Committee for the Vice-President for Planning. She served on the State of Hawai’i Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology, and as President of the Hawaii Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

James Hall, Ph.D.

James Hall III(Professor) – Audiology, diagnostic audiology, auditory electrophysiology, auditory brainstem response (ABR), auditory processing disorders (APD), tinnitus, hyperacusis, newborn hearing screening

Dr. Hall is Professor and Director of the online Speech Pathology and Audiology (SPAPP) undergraduate program at the University of Hawaii. He is an internationally recognized audiologist with 40-years of clinical, teaching, research, and administrative experience. He received his Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from Northwestern University and his Ph.D. in audiology from Baylor College of Medicine. During his career, Dr. Hall has held clinical and academic audiology positions at major medical centers. He is the recipient of numerous professional awards and honors and the author of over 190 peer-reviewed publications, invited articles, book chapters, and 10 textbooks.

Barbara Gordon-Wendt, Ph.D., CCC-A

Dr. Gordon-Wendt joined the University of Hawai`i Mānoa Communication Sciences and Disorders Department (UHCSD) as an Assistant Professor in 2024. She has an extensive background in university, hospital, and civilian military settings, conducting all types of audiological testing and hearing aid dispensing on patients of all ages. She especially enjoys working with newborns, young children, and geriatrics and their families.

Kayla Kawamura, M.S., CCC-SLP

Kayla Kawamura(Instructor) – Pediatric speech sound disorders and language disorders
 
Ms. Kawamura is an Instructor at the University of Hawai`i Mānoa Communication Sciences and Disorders Department (UHCSD). She serves as a speech-language pathologist with the Hawai’i Department of Education. Ms. Kawamura received her master’s degree in Speech-language Pathology from the University of Hawai`i Mānoa. Her professional interests include supporting communication for individuals with autism, expressive-receptive language disorders, and speech sound disorders.

Brittany Evans, M.S., CCC-SLP

Ms. Brittany Evans is an Instructor at the University of Hawai`i Mānoa Communication Sciences and Disorders Department (UHCSD). She serves as an acute speech-language pathologist at Queen’s Medical Center Health – West Oahu. Ms. Evans received her master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Hawai`i Mānoa. She specializes in diagnosis and treatment of speech, language, swallowing, voice, and cognitive-communication disorders related to neurologic diseases in the adult population. She has 7 years of experience in the acute care setting – specializing in evaluation and treatment of dysphagia. She is certified in VitalStim Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) and competent in performing Modified Barium Swallowing Studies.

Kathy Maemori, M.S., CCC-SLP

Mrs. Maemori is an Instructor at the University of Hawai`i Mānoa Communication Sciences and Disorders Department (UHCSD). She holds a Master of Science in Speech Pathology and Audiology from the University of Hawai`i Mānoa. She has an extensive background in the diagnosis and treatment of various speech, language, and communication disorders. Maemori has a professional interest in working with individuals with autism, phonological disorders, and language disorders. She retired from the State of Hawaii Department of Education, where she provided direct services and coordinated the speech services in the Honolulu district.

Christie Salvador, M.S., CCC-SLP

Christie Salvador(Instructor) – Pediatric speech sound disorders, language disorders, and AAC
 
Ms. Salvador is an Instructor at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa Communication Sciences and Disorders Department (UHCSD) and a practicing speech-language pathologist with the Hawai'i State Department of Education. She specializes in assessing and treating a range of speech, language, and communication disorders, with a particular focus on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and supporting children with complex communication needs. With over 20 years of experience in educational settings, she is dedicated to helping individuals develop meaningful and effective communication skills. A graduate of the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa's master's program in Speech-Language Pathology, Ms. Salvador has also served in leadership roles within the Hawai'i Speech-Language-Hearing Association, including President, Director-at-Large for Educational Affairs, and Continuing Education Administrator. 

Ashley Castillo, M.S., CCC-SLP

Ashley Mitchell(Instructor) – Pediatric speech sound disorders and language disorders

Ms. Castillo is an Instructor at the University of Hawai`i Mānoa Communication Sciences and Disorders Department (UHCSD). She also is a speech-language pathologist for the Hawai'i Department of Education. She received a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Hawai`i Mānoa. Her professional interests include receptive and expressive language disorders and speech sound disorders.

Andrew Niles, M.S., CCC-SLP

Mr. Niles is an Instructor at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa Communication Sciences and Disorders Department (UHCSD) and a speech-language pathologist (SLP) at Straub Benioff Medical Center, where he provides evaluation and treatment for a wide range of disorders in both acute care and outpatient settings, including voice, swallowing, and cognitive-communication. He previously held an SLP position providing services for students with communication challenges in the Hawai'i State Department of Education. He earned his M.S. in speech-language pathology from the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa CSD Department and a B.F.A. in musical theatre from the University of Michigan. His background as a voice teacher and trained singer informs his work with voice disorders, particularly in the rehabilitation of injured voices and optimizing vocal function for professional and occupational voice users. He is a licensed SPEAK OUT! provider for Parkinson's and is competent in analyzing Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS) and conducting Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) for instrumental assessment of swallowing.
