The Speech Pathology and Audiology Prerequisite Program (SPAPP) provides the foundational CSD training required for acceptance into graduate programs for speech-language pathology or audiology in the United States. Courses may be taken individually. All courses are offered online and can be taken anywhere in the world. Students can complete the seven SPAPP courses within one year.
FALL Courses:
CSD 432 Phonetics (3 credits) An introduction to the fundamentals of phonetic and phonological development, transcription of speech sounds, analysis, interpretation, and cultural variation. Required course
CSD 436 Introduction to Communication Sciences and Disorders (3 credits)Information and theoretical foundations serve as an introduction to the field of communication disorders. Provides an overview of the normal processes and disorders of speech, language, hearing, and swallowing. Required course
SPRING Courses:
CSD 433 Speech and Language Development (3 credits) Provides an understanding of children’s acquisition of speech, language, and normal communication development from birth through adolescence. Required course
CSD 435 Introduction to Clinical Methods in Communication Sciences and Disorders (3 credits) Provides observation and discussion of the clinical management of individuals with communication disorders and practical experience related to clinical procedures and requirements. Repeatable unlimited times. Required course
SUMMER Courses:
CSD 431 Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech and Hearing Mechanism (3 credits) Overview of the structures and functions of the speech, language, and hearing system used for communication and swallowing. Required course
CSD 434 Acoustics and Psychoacoustics of Speech and Hearing (3 credits)Provides an understanding of the fundamental processes underlying the production and perception of speech, as well as the physical and psychological aspects of sound and their measurement. Required course
CSD 437 Introduction to Audiometry and Auditory Disorders (3 credits) An overview of the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, acoustic, basic knowledge of auditory disorders and testing procedures, and introduction to rehabilitative audiology. Required course
CSD 438 Statistics (3 credits) Basic statistical concepts and methods are presented in a manner to emphasize the principles of data collection and analysis techniques in social and behavioral sciences. Elective course
